Story 09
Generated Seascapes
Immerse yourself in this seemlessly transforming reel of fictional seascape footages compiled by local artist Akai Chew.
By scanning 300 satellite imagery from former British port towns and feeding it through GAN - Generative Adverserial Network, and using the neural networks to generate maps, this work speculates on the massive changes to the physical landscape that humans had created.
The result is a phantasmic sequence whereby each frame does not seem to correlate with the next, caricaturising a kind of evolution composed by discontinuities that this installation embodies - the shoreline whose present state as a padang field bears no perceptible semblance to its original form of a shoreline.
